The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse

History More then a century and a half ago the urgent need for a sure footed easy-traveling horse was recognized by the settlers and pioneer of the Ozarks.

As people migrated west .They brought with them the best saddle stock.  The breeding of this stock was largely Arabian, Morgan, and plantation horses. Later, more American Saddlebred and Tenn. Walker and Standard breeding were added to give the Fox trotting horse a more pleasing appearance and disposition.

The ability to travel long distances at a comfortable speed of five-eight miles an hour made the Fox Trotting horse a favorite.

Today the breed is in demand as a trail and pleasure horse, show horse, and for cross-country trail horse.

It is often described as the common man's pleasure horse because of its gentle disposition.

Most famous families of the Fox Trotting horse have been known throughout the Ozarks to this day the names of, The Copper Bottoms, Diamonds, Brimmers, Red Bucks Chiefs, Steel Dust, Cold Decks and many more are recognized to this day.

The breed association, 1948 a group of interested horse breeders incorporated and organized a charter, to maintain an accurate stud book.

In 1973 the corporation changed over from stock to a membership corporation.

In 1982 all horses approved under saddle to be registered in the MFTHBA were required to have at least one parent permanently reg. in the MFTHBA.

In 1983 any horse approved under saddle for registration had to have both parents registered in the MFTHBA.

The regulations brought to the Association what is referred to as Closed books.

Characteristics of the Fox Trotting horse:  The gait is basically a diagonal gait.  The horse will perform this gait by walking in the front and trotting in the back with reach in each stride. Characteristics of the fox trotter travels with animation, rhythm and style and a smooth gliding gait.
